How to Come Out of the Broom Closet with Confidence (Even If You’re Scared)

There comes a moment on every spiritual woman’s journey when hiding starts to feel heavier than fear. You’ve been lighting candles, meditating, pulling cards, or working with energy quietly – maybe even secretly – because part of you worries what people would think if they knew. That inner tug-of-war between truth and safety is one of the clearest signs the Witch Wound is ready to be healed.

I began to heal mine in November 2024 after hiding my witchy side and interests for decades. So I get it.

The phrase “coming out of the broom closet” refers to openly embracing your spiritual or witchy side – whether that means wearing your pentacle necklace without tucking it under your shirt, talking about astrology at brunch, or simply not hiding your altar anymore. But for many, this step feels terrifying. Centuries of conditioning have taught us that being different invites danger. Even though the world has changed, the body still remembers.

The fear of visibility doesn’t just live in the mind – it’s stored in the nervous system. It’s the reason your heart races when you share something spiritual online or why you downplay your intuition around certain people. The Witch Wound whispers, “Be careful. Stay small. Don’t give them a reason to judge you.” But what if, this time, you didn’t let fear decide who you get to be?

Coming out of the broom closet isn’t about proving anything or converting anyone. It’s about alignment – allowing the outside world to match who you’ve already become inside. When you live in alignment, your energy flows freely. You manifest faster, feel lighter, and attract people who genuinely resonate with your truth.

If you’re ready to step out, start small. Tell one safe person first – someone who already loves you for your authenticity. Share something you’ve learned or experienced that feels meaningful. You might be surprised at how supportive people can be when you lead with vulnerability instead of defensiveness. Remember, you’re not asking for approval; you’re inviting connection. Nobody has to agree or get it. But they do need to be respectful.

Creating energetic protection around your truth also helps. Ground yourself before conversations, visualize white or golden light around your body, and set the intention that your words are received by those who are ready and meant to hear them. Spiritual visibility isn’t about exposure – it’s about energetic discernment. You can be authentic without oversharing.

Another powerful practice is to anchor your identity through ritual. Light a candle, place your hand over your heart, and say:
“It is safe to be seen for who I am. My magic is not a threat – it is love made visible.”
Repeat this anytime old fears arise. Over time, your subconscious begins to associate visibility with safety rather than danger.

Stepping out of the broom closet also means releasing perfectionism. You don’t need to know everything about witchcraft, astrology, or ritual to be “legitimate.” You are allowed to learn, explore, and evolve publicly. The more you show up as imperfectly human, the more others feel safe to do the same.

And here’s the secret: every time one woman steps out authentically, she opens a door for thousands of others still hiding. Your courage ripples through the collective.

You become living proof that the new era of witchcraft isn’t about rebellion – it’s about reclamation.

It’s okay to be scared. Fear is just a sign that you’re stretching into authenticity. The Witch Wound may whisper that it’s unsafe, but your soul knows the truth: this is what you came here to do. You are not meant to hide your light. You are meant to embody it.
